The Proof is in the Poster

Given the task of creating an online Italian language course based on media-rich experiences, Instructional Designer Penny Ralston-Berg turned to YouSeeU for “Using Student-Generated Video to Assess Language Learning Online.” As detailed in her poster presented at the 7th annual Quality Matters conference last November, Penny designed not just one, but three courses focused on immersive learning experiences. These included content delivered through a “course story”, and authentic assessment of speaking, listening and comprehension skills. The assessment pieces included simulated conversations with native Italian speakers and synchronous video activities for partner practice. Instructors spent their time providing rich feedback and personalized coaching using time-stamped comments and video responses to video submissions. One student had this reaction upon course completion: “The storyline and the repeated use of the vocabulary helped me learn the most in this course.
